Crochet Lily Appliqués for Blankets and Bedspreads
Project Overview

Application: These motifs are crocheted separately and then hand-sewn onto a fabric or crocheted base.
Materials Needed
Yarn: Fine or Mercerized Cotton (White for petals, Green for stems/leaves, and Yellow/Orange for centers).
Hook: 2.0mm or 2.5mm for a tight, crisp definition.
Needle: Tapestry needle for assembly.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Large White Petals (Make 6 per flower)
Step 1: Start with a foundation chain of 15 to 20 stitches.
Step 2: Work around both sides of the chain to create a pointed leaf shape (Petal). Use a sequence of SC, HDC, DC, and Treble Crochet to increase height in the middle and taper at the ends.
Step 3: To give the petal “structure” (as seen in the image), work a round of Slip Stitches or a Reverse Single Crochet (Crab Stitch) around the edge.
Step 4: For the 3D effect, lightly starch the petals or use a wire frame if they are very large.
2. Flower Center (Pistils)
Technique: Use yellow or orange yarn.
Step: Create 3 to 5 long chains (approx. 10 chains each) and work a Cluster Stitch or a Popcorn Stitch at the very tip to represent the pollen.
Assembly: Sew these into the center of your 6 gathered petals.
3. Green Leaves and Buds
Leaves: Follow the same logic as the petals but make them longer and thinner using dark green yarn.
Buds: Crochet a small solid cone shape using white yarn and wrap the base with green yarn to simulate a flower that hasn’t opened yet.
4. Long Stems
Technique: Surface Crochet or I-Cord.
Step: You can crochet long I-cords and pin them onto the bedspread in sweeping, curved lines before sewing.
5. Final Layout and Attachment
Composition: Lay the bedspread flat. Arrange the stems first, then the leaves, and finally the large flower heads on top.
Sewing: Use a matching thread and a “blind stitch” to attach the appliqués. Ensure you only catch the top layer of the fabric so the stitches don’t show on the other side.
